Vitamins are generally considered to be essential elements for human health.

About 82% of old age men and women in the world take different types of vitamin supplement or tablets.

But excessive intake of vitamins of high doses appears to be a potential threat for human health. These harmful effects of vitamins are also likely to manifest in case a high doses of vitamins are taken without any reason and for a longer period of time.

So to speak every vitamin supplement has a toxicity limit. Taking vitamin beyond that limit is harmful for human health.

A salient feature of harmful effects of excessive intake of vitamins is presented below:

Increased level of calcium in blood due to intake of excessive calcium can give rise to constipation and formation of stones in kidneys. When calcium and vitamin D are taken for a longer period of time in high doses can result in this situation.

Vitamin A.

Intake of high doses of vitamin A is dangerous for pregnant women. Intake of vitamin A in toxic level can become a threat to various birth malfunctions/malformations. Besides excessive level of vitamin intake can become harmful for liver, bone and skin. Accidental and sudden intake of vitamin A may create problems like vomiting, headache and skin problem.

Vitamin C

Intake of vitamin C more than 1 gm at a time may cause diarrhoea. It may become harmful when children take excessive vitamin C content lozenge.

Iron

Iron or iron content tablet tend to increase the level of gastric and may cause constipation. When persons with thalassemia or with history of borne hemoglobin problem take iron or iron tablet, become subjects for accumulation of additional iron in liver, brain and various organs leading to malfunction of these organs. Besides excessive use of iron may create problem of digestive systems of anybody. Excessive iron may cause poisonous action for the children as well.

Zinc

Multivitamin tablet contains the element zinc in it. Zinc is an essential and useful element. But excessive zinc intake can reduce the absorption of natural level of iron and copper and cause anemia.

Vitamin B.

It is assumed that vitamin B complex keeps the nervous system sound. But excessive vitamin B6 is may cause harm to nervous system.

Vitamin D

Excessive vitamin D may increase the level of calcium in blood.

Fluoride

Sometimes additional fluoride is added to water or toothpaste. Fluoride is useful for tooth health but excessive fluoride cause harm to tooth enamel and make teeth to become yellow.

The foregoing discussions indicate the various harmful effects of vitamins on human health. Justifiably the advice of specialists and physicians to give more attention to nutritious food around us in lieu of vitamin and mineral tablets is worth mentioning.
